Domain name in Tunisia, .tn or .com, how to choose well
.tn, .com.tn or .com, how to pick the name, who must own it, and the mistakes that cost a small business dearly.
In this article
For a business that sells to customers in Tunisia, a .tn name says "local company" at a glance, while a .com is more universal and often simpler to register. Both work. What really matters is that the name is short, easy to say on the phone, and owned by the business owner. Here is how to choose, and the traps to avoid.
What a domain name is and why a business wants one
A domain name is the address people type to reach a site, for example the name of the business followed by .tn or .com. You do not buy it once and for all. You rent it, usually by the year, from a registrar, and you renew it.
Why a business wants its own:
- It fits on a business card, a shop window, a bag, an invoice.
- It is easy to say out loud, which a long social page address is not.
- It stays the same if the business changes freelancer, host or tool.
- It makes an email address in the company's name possible.
A domain is only worth something if it leads to a useful site. On that point, see what a small business website should contain.
.tn, .com.tn or .com: the comparison
Names in .tn are registered through accredited registrars, under the national .tn naming charter. Conditions, required documents and prices vary from one registrar to another and change over time. Before you promise anything to a client, check with the registrar.
| Criterion | .tn | .com.tn | .com |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signal for the customer | Clearly Tunisian, short | Tunisian and commercial, longer | Universal, no country indication |
| Availability of the name | National space, a short name is more often free | Same, to be checked | Worldwide space, many short names already taken |
| Where you register | A registrar accredited for .tn | A registrar accredited for .tn | Any international registrar |
| Requirements to check | Naming charter, documents asked for, identity of the holder | The same, plus the rules specific to that extension | Few conditions in general, identity and email of the holder |
| Renewal | Period and fee depend on the registrar | Period and fee depend on the registrar | Usually yearly, fee depends on the registrar |
| Portability | Changing registrar is possible, ask for the procedure | Same | Transfer between registrars with an authorization code |
On search ranking, let us stay reasonable. A local extension signals a local business to people, and Google documents country-code domains as a geotargeting signal. That guarantees no position in the results: the content of the site, the Google Maps listing and the reviews weigh far more in what a customer sees.
A simple rule: if the business sells in its neighbourhood or its city, .tn is a logical choice. If it also targets customers abroad, or if .tn raises an administrative difficulty, .com does the job very well. When the budget allows it, some take both and point the second one to the first.
How to choose a good name
- Short. Two or three words at most. The longer it is, the more typing mistakes you get.
- The trade and the city, or the brand. If the business has a name people know in the area, use that name. Otherwise, the trade followed by the city is understood at once.
- Easy to say on the phone. Run the test: dictate the address to someone without spelling it. If they write it correctly, the name is good.
- No hyphens if possible. A hyphen gets forgotten when spoken and sends the customer elsewhere.
- No digits and no confusing double letters, for the same reason.
- Consistent with the rest. Check that the same name is used on the Google Maps listing and on the social pages of the business. A customer who sees three different names wonders whether this is the right place.
Before you pay, also check that the name does not copy somebody else's brand.
Who must own the domain
The domain must be registered in the business owner's name, with their email address and their contact details. Not in the freelancer's name, not in the agency's name.
Why it matters:
- The holder is the one who decides. If the domain is in your name, the business depends on you forever, and you carry a responsibility you do not want.
- Renewal reminders go to the holder's email address. If it is yours and you change activity, the domain expires and nobody knows.
- In case of a disagreement, an illness or a move abroad, the owner must be able to carry on without you.
How to do it properly:
- Create the account at the registrar with the owner's email, sitting next to them.
- Let them choose the password. You do not need to know it.
- Ask for delegated access, or do the technical settings together with them.
- Hand over a written sheet: name of the registrar, email of the account, expiry date, what has to be paid every year.
If you have already registered a domain in your own name for a client, ask the registrar for the change of holder procedure and do it now. Also write the ownership of the domain and its yearly cost into your offer: how much to charge for a website in Tunisia explains how to include these costs.
Renewal: never let it expire
A domain that expires means a site that disappears and emails that stop arriving. Depending on the extension and the registrar, the name can then be taken by someone else. Three protections:
- Two reminders in the owner's calendar, one month and one week before the due date.
- Automatic renewal when the registrar offers it, with a valid payment method.
- A contact email address the owner really reads.
Free subdomain, DNS and email
The free subdomain. It is an address lent by a platform: the name of the business placed in front of the platform's name. It costs nothing and it is enough to start, to show the site and to test whether customers care. Its limits: the business does not own it, the address is longer to dictate, and it goes away if you leave the platform. It is a step, not a destination. LeadMax publishes the site on a free address first and lets you attach a custom domain later, once the owner has made up their mind.
Connecting the domain to the site. DNS is the directory that says which server the visitors of a domain name should be sent to. To connect a domain to a site, you add in the registrar's control panel the records your host gives you, then you wait for the change to spread.
Email on the domain. An address made of the word contact followed by the business's domain inspires more trust than a personal address. It needs a mail service, often a paid one, and dedicated DNS records. It is not essential on day one: start with the site, add email afterwards.
Mistakes to avoid
- Registering the domain in the freelancer's name or with the freelancer's email.
- Choosing a long name with hyphens that nobody can dictate.
- Printing cards and a shop sign with a temporary address.
- Forgetting the renewal, or leaving an expired payment method on file.
- Promising a .tn without having checked the conditions and documents with the registrar.
- Believing the domain replaces everything else. It completes the presence of the business, as shown in why a Google Maps listing is not enough.
Frequently asked questions
Should I take .tn and .com at the same time?
It is not required. One well chosen name is enough for a local business. Taking both mostly prevents someone else from registering the same name, and the second can simply redirect to the first.
Can a private person register a .tn name?
The conditions are set by the .tn naming charter and applied by the accredited registrars. They evolve, and so do the documents asked for. Put the question to the registrar before you commit to a client.
Can the domain name be changed later?
Yes, but it has a cost: cards to reprint, links to update, customer habits to rebuild. Better to spend ten more minutes on the choice at the start.
Is a free subdomain enough to begin with?
To launch the site and show it, yes. As soon as the business prints it on its materials or counts on it to be found, move to a real domain. With LeadMax, the site stays the same and only the address changes.
